This home has stood in its present location for almost 100 years and was built as part of the first development of the historic Leffingwell Ranch, a subdivision of the original Santa Gertrudes land grant. It was purchased by Frank and Hannah Milhous Nixon and sold in 1975 by their son, Pres. Richard Nixon. It was the address used by RMN while he was a congressman and vice-president in the ‘40s and ‘50s.

Please stress the importance of the pioneer Quaker Milhous family to the original settlement of Whittier and to the Nixon family’s contribution to the early settlement of East Whittier. When Whittier Blvd. was nothing more than a country dirt road, the Nixon family set up their general store and had a presence in that location for decades, while Richard attended East Whittier Middle School, Whittier High School, and Whittier College.

Brother Don Nixon operated several restaurants and a store/gas station at Santa Gertrudes and Whittier Boulevard—the name “Nixon’s” was a familiar sight to passers-by. The Nixon Family connection to the community is of great significance to the City of Whittier and to history of the community they served. The home must be kept on the city’s official list of historic resources while an alternative to demolition is sought.
